HARARE - Zimbabwean political analyst and human rights defender Abigale Mupambi has criticised both the ruling elite and opposition in Mozambique, arguing that tactical failures on both sides dented the credibility of the country's recent elections and exposed citizens to unrest.

Her analysis, which has since been endorsed by renowned international relations and conflict resolution expert David Nyekorach Matsanga, explores the pre‑election environment, conduct during polling, and the violent aftermath.

Mupambi, who recently submitted a technical thesis on Tanzania's controversial October elections, emphasised that elections are not isolated events but long processes requiring responsibility from all political actors. She accused both government and opposition of failing to safeguard citizens, noting that ordinary people were left vulnerable to violence.

She further interrogated the government's "heavy hands" against civilians, alongside claims by President Suluhu Samia of an "external hand" involving foreign NGOs allegedly inciting youth.

Reacting to Mupambi's work, Matsanga commended her for a bold and detailed submission.

"Her submission is a bold stand for Africa, aligning with my own calls to resist foreign interference in African democracies," Matsanga said.

Seasoned journalist Keith Guvamombe unpacked the analysis, highlighting its multiple perspectives and technical depth. Matsanga's endorsement framed Mupambi's work as part of a wider continental struggle to safeguard Africa's sovereignty and democratic processes.

The development also underscores the growing role of women in political analysis and leadership, traditionally a male‑dominated space, at a time when Tanzania itself is led by a woman president.

Despite widespread condemnation of the elections as not free, fair or credible, Suluhu Samia has since been inaugurated as President.
