BULAWAYO - The Civic Society and Churches Joint Forum (CSCJF) has called on Government to intervene at Mpilo Central Hospital, accusing health workers of failing to promptly attend to road traffic accident victims.
The outcry follows a kombi accident in Bulawayo on Sunday, after which several injured passengers were transported to Mpilo Hospital. By Monday afternoon, they were reportedly still awaiting treatment.
CSCJF National Coordinator Max Mkandla expressed anger over the delays, saying accident victims should be treated as emergency cases.
"Since yesterday these people have not been attended to by now. As I speak I am with them at Mpilo Hospital. Is there no priority that people injured in accidents should be treated as an emergency?," Mkandla said.
He accused hospital staff of negligence and called for accountability from the Minister of Health.
"The Minister in charge of health must come out or resign if he is not able to deal with the situation in this hospital. Health staff here are stubborn and very slow. There is no hospital that keeps someone for two days when that person was injured in an accident without attending to that person," he added.
Mkandla said some victims still had blood clots on their clothes, evidence they had not been attended to since arrival. He warned that Mpilo Hospital was becoming a "human slaughter pole" instead of a place of healing.
He further suggested that if President Emmerson Mnangagwa were to make a surprise visit, many staff members would be dismissed for incompetence.
Hospital administration officials could not be reached for comment.
