A 33-year-old Bulawayo woman has been sentenced to complete 105 hours of community service after gambling away US$700 that her husband had entrusted to her. Simeleni Dube, from Nketa 8 suburb, appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Mehluli Moyo on a charge of unreasonable disposal of property.

Dube pleaded guilty and was initially sentenced to six months in prison, with three months suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence during that period. The remaining three months were suspended provided she completes 105 hours of community service at Manondwane Primary School, starting Friday and to be finished within four weeks.

Prosecutor Mandrela Chisiiwa told the court that the complainant, 43-year-old Tawanda Mugodhi, had given his wife US$700 for safekeeping on October 14 at around 6:20 a.m. Four days later, Mugodhi requested the money, but Dube failed to return it, claiming she had lent it to someone else. Upon realizing that the funds were gone, Mugodhi reported the matter to the police, resulting in Dube's arrest.

During the trial, Magistrate Moyo asked Dube to explain where the money had gone. She admitted to using it to gamble on cards in town, ultimately losing the entire amount.

In a surprising and compassionate gesture, Mugodhi told the court that he forgives his wife and requested that she not be ordered to repay the money, explaining that she lacks the means to do so and that he is the primary provider for the family.
