President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to attend the World Government Summit in Dubai this week as Zimbabwe steps up its engagement and re-engagement drive aimed at attracting investment across key sectors of the economy.
The summit, which brings together global political leaders, policymakers and business executives, is expected to provide Zimbabwe with a strategic platform to advance its trade, investment and diplomatic objectives. Reporting from Dubai, Bruce Chahwanda spoke to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, who outlined the significance of the President's participation.
Professor Murwira described the United Arab Emirates as one of Zimbabwe's most important economic partners, noting that it currently ranks among the country's leading export destinations. He said the World Government Summit brings together governments that are responsive to technological change and shifting geopolitical realities, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement.
"His Excellency the President will engage with world leaders, business executives and political figures to advance Zimbabwe's trade agenda, which has seen exports grow from around US$2 billion in 2012 to more than US$16 billion today," Professor Murwira said. "The main objective is to ensure prosperity, happiness and fulfilling lives for the people of Zimbabwe through trade and economic investment."
He added that the summit also offers an opportunity to project Zimbabwe's image as a peaceful, stable and forward-looking nation open for business.
"Discussions will cover tourism, technology and governance. Zimbabwe has been rated by Forbes magazine as a top destination for investment by 2025. These achievements reflect sustained foreign policy efforts and the importance of the President's presence at strategic global platforms such as the World Government Summit," Professor Murwira said.
The minister highlighted Zimbabwe's comparative advantages, pointing to its natural resource endowment and human capital as key drivers for investment.
"Zimbabwe is unique, with the highest mineral density, a favourable climate and strong agricultural potential, including high-value crops such as blueberries and tobacco," he said. "The country also has a rich heritage, abundant natural resources, a secure environment and high human capital, with a literacy rate of about 98%. These attributes make Zimbabwe an attractive destination for investment in minerals, agriculture, tourism and human capital development."
Professor Murwira said the overarching goal is to convert these strengths into tangible economic benefits that improve living standards for all citizens.
He also outlined President Mnangagwa's programme during the summit, saying the Head of State is expected to hold a series of high-level engagements over the next three days.
"His Excellency will meet world leaders in both political and business capacities. These engagements are in line with Zimbabwe's constitutional mandate under Section 8, Chapter 2, to promote equality, prosperity and fulfilling lives for all people," Professor Murwira said.
The World Government Summit is regarded as a key global forum for shaping future governance models, innovation and international cooperation, and Zimbabwe's participation underscores its intention to remain actively engaged on the international stage.
