Several Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators have dismissed claims by their Chief Whip, Charles Moyo, that they endorsed Zanu‑PF’s proposed constitutional amendments to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term to 2030.

Moyo recently issued a statement suggesting that CCC MPs were in agreement with the amendments. However, Maggie Chakabuda, Tendekai Matara, Happymore Bvondo, Richard Tsvangirai and Chalton Hwende have publicly rejected the claim, accusing Moyo of publishing false resolutions.

On 12 February, Sengezo Tshabangu — a leading proponent of the 2030 agenda — issued a statement through Moyo indicating that his faction of CCC supported Constitutional Amendment No. 3. The statement was released after several opposition MPs attended a meeting at Parliament.

Following public backlash, some MPs who attended the meeting apologised, saying they had believed it was a parliamentary caucus meeting dealing with parliamentary business, not the 2030 agenda. Many admitted attending the meeting was a mistake.

Masvingo Senator Maggie Chakabuda apologised via WhatsApp, saying she attended without knowing it was a Tshabangu‑aligned caucus. She said she contributed nothing and reaffirmed her allegiance to Nelson Chamisa.

Masvingo Proportional Representative MP Tendekai Matara also distanced herself from the 2030 agenda, saying she attended the meeting as part of normal parliamentary caucus duties but did not endorse any constitutional amendment. She said claims that MPs supported the 2030 agenda were “drama” created by the author of the resolutions.

Happymore Bvondo Chidziva, speaking to a colleague in Australia, said Moyo’s resolutions were false, insisting that MPs agreed not to debate an amendment that had not been gazetted. His remarks were supported by Hwende, who wrote on X that although he attended the meeting, no resolutions were made in support of the 2030 agenda or Constitutional Amendment No. 3.

Richard Tsvangirai also issued statements on WhatsApp and other platforms confirming he attended the meeting but completely rejected any suggestion that he supported the 2030 agenda.

The five MPs join 31 others who refused to attend Tshabangu’s meetings on the matter, bringing the total number of opposition MPs opposing the 2030 agenda and Constitutional Amendment No. 3 to 35.
