A 25‑year‑old man from Zhombe in the Midlands has been jailed for an effective nine years after he was convicted of stealing a heifer from a local farmer.
The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court sentenced Brighton Ngwenya to nine years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of stealing a heifer worth US$500 from a 47‑year‑old complainant.
The court heard that on 20 January, Ngwenya, who resides in Mudzingwa Village, stole the animal from the complainant’s kraal in Mkhuhlane Village during the night. The following morning, the complainant discovered the heifer missing and searched for it without success.
On 2 February, Ngwenya attempted to sell the stolen beast to another villager, who immediately alerted the complainant. The complainant rushed to the scene and positively identified the heifer as his property.
A police report was made, leading to Ngwenya’s arrest.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said stock theft remains a serious threat to rural livelihoods.
“The NPAZ will remain steadfast in advocating for stiff sentences that also deter would‑be offenders,” it said.
