The Chimanimani Magistrates' Court has set 13 March as the trial date for Buhera South Member of Parliament Ngonidzashe Mudekunye (Zanu PF), who is facing a public violence charge alongside five co‑accused.
Mudekunye, who is out on bail, appeared before magistrate Regis Mawarire. Prosecutor Hardlife Machando told the court that the docket was not yet ready. Mudekunye’s lawyer, Benjamin Bhasikiti, applied for the matter to be removed from remand, but the court ruled in favour of the State and granted a postponement.
According to the allegations, on 18 January Mudekunye arrived at Birchnough Bridge and ordered a female security guard, Prettymore Kasiya, to allow a truck behind him to pass without the required weighbridge documents. When Kasiya refused, Mudekunye allegedly became furious and assaulted her with open hands.
Kasiya was left bleeding and in pain. She reported the matter to the police, leading to Mudekunye’s arrest. He was detained in leg irons by Mutare police.
Mudekunye is reportedly no stranger to controversy, with a history of disrupting party events and allegedly assaulting people in Buhera.
