4,305 inmates in Zimbabwe walk free under Presidential amnesty

A wave of joy swept through correctional facilities across Zimbabwe on Monday as thousands of inmates walked to freedom under a Presidential Amnesty.
A total of 4,305 prisoners are set to benefit from the clemency programme. Of these, 3,755 male inmates were immediately released, while the remainder will be freed in a staggered process. The amnesty also covers 223 female inmates.
Scenes of celebration were reported at various prisons as families gathered to receive their relatives, marking an emotional end to their incarceration. Prison officials are expected to continue processing the remaining beneficiaries in line with administrative procedures.
The Presidential Amnesty is part of periodic clemency measures aimed at decongesting prisons and offering qualifying inmates an opportunity to reintegrate into society.
