A gang of six armed robbers posing as police officers has reportedly terrorised villagers in parts of Buhera and Hwedza, stealing cash and leaving residents fearful. The suspects are said to travel in a white Nissan Navara and approach victims under the pretext of investigating illegal fuel sales before brandishing firearms and demanding money.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, confirmed that a manhunt is underway and urged the public to assist in apprehending the suspects.
In the first reported incident, 33-year-old Blessing Gutu of Mutiweshiri Business Centre was robbed of US$190. The gang allegedly entered his premises around 1pm, accused him of illegal fuel trading, and, spotting a wallet, took the cash before fleeing towards Dorowa.
Just 30 minutes later, a similar attack occurred on Blessing Nyamurova (33) of Farm 335, Zviyambe, who handed over US$200 after being confronted by the same gang, claiming to be from ZRP Wedza. The suspects reportedly left in the same white Nissan Navara, driving towards Chivhu–Nyazura Road.
"No arrests have been made so far and the stolen money has not been recovered," Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said, noting that the suspects remain unidentified.
He warned the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer. Genuine officers are required to properly identify themselves during official duties, and members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious encounters immediately.
Police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the six-strong gang as investigations continue.
