Mkandla says Chamisa, Mwonzora lack moral authority to comment on Constitution

Outspoken war veteran Max Mkandla has dismissed former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa and MDC president Douglas Mwonzora as unqualified to comment on the ongoing debate around Constitutional Amendment No. 3, arguing that both men previously violated their own party constitutions.

Chamisa recently criticised what he called "violation and abuse of the Constitution", but Mkandla said the former opposition leader had no moral standing to speak on constitutionalism.

Mkandla accused Chamisa of rising to power in the MDC through unconstitutional means following the death of founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

"He himself violated the constitution when he came in as a vice president and later wrestled authority of the party from former vice president Thokozani Khupe, who was supposed to take over after the death of the founding leader," Mkandla said.

He argued that Chamisa was "the last person" who should lecture the nation on respecting constitutions, claiming his actions demonstrated how easily a constitution can be disregarded for political gain.

Turning to Mwonzora, Mkandla questioned the legitimacy of his rise to the MDC presidency.

"How did he arrive at being president of the MDC? Can he place his votes on the table to show that he went to congress and got voted? When he split the party, what was happening — was he following the constitution?" he asked.

Mkandla said both leaders "cheated" their way into power within their parties, warning that if they behaved this way at party level, they could not be trusted with national leadership.

He urged them to "stop fooling the people" and instead align themselves with what he described as "better constitutionalists" such as Tendai Biti, Job Sikhala, Lovemore Madhuku and others whom he claimed had never violated their party constitutions.
