Senior legal practitioner Mr Canan Dube has issued a formal letter of demand to Mr Reason Wafawarova, calling for an immediate retraction of statements he says are false and defamatory.
In the letter, law firm Dube, Manikai & Hwacha (DMH Legal) states that Mr Dube, a senior partner at the firm and a prominent figure in both legal and business circles, was defamed through posts allegedly published on X (formerly Twitter). The posts are said to have linked him, alongside Professor Jonathan Moyo and Advocate Thabani Mpofu, to what was described as a "Matabeleland cabal" allegedly involved in receiving US$20 million in connection with a supposed "term extension agenda" involving the President.
The letter also disputes claims regarding Mr Dube's origins, describing them as false and misleading and harmful to his reputation.
According to the demand, the statements are false, malicious, and grossly defamatory, and are said to have caused or be capable of causing serious harm to Mr Dube's professional standing.
The legal representatives state that Mr Dube has never received any such payment and reject the allegations in their entirety.
Mr Wafawarova is required, in terms of the letter, to immediately retract the statements in writing and publish a retraction on the same platform where the posts were made, remove and permanently delete the content, and provide written confirmation of compliance within 48 hours.
The letter warns that failure to comply will result in legal proceedings being instituted for defamation, including a claim for damages and costs.
The matter remains unresolved at this stage, with potential litigation expected should the demand not be met within the stipulated timeframe.
