A 38‑year‑old Chitungwiza man has been convicted of culpable homicide following a fatal road traffic accident along the Harare–Mutare Road, authorities have confirmed.
Terrence Kambanje was found guilty by the Rusape Magistrates' Court after a trial into the December 2022 incident that claimed the life of a 41‑year‑old pedestrian.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the court imposed a US$600 fine on Kambanje and barred him from driving for two years. He was also handed a four‑month prison sentence, wholly suspended, and his driver's licence was cancelled.
The court heard that on 1 December 2022, at the 169‑kilometre peg along the busy highway, Kambanje was driving a white Freightliner truck when he struck the victim, who had been standing by the roadside looking for transport. The pedestrian died on the spot.
A post‑mortem later confirmed that the cause of death was polytrauma sustained during the collision.
In its findings, the court ruled that Kambanje failed to exercise due caution upon noticing a pedestrian near the roadway. He was found to have neglected maintaining a proper lookout and did not take reasonable action to avoid the collision when it became imminent.
The NPAZ has since urged motorists to prioritise safety and responsibility on the roads, warning that negligence continues to cost lives across the country.
