The City of Gweru has begun rehabilitating its Central Business District (CBD) road network in a phased programme aimed at restoring key roads, with authorities expressing hope that the work will be completed across the entire CBD by August this year.
City of Gweru Public Relations Officer Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed that rehabilitation works commenced last Thursday and are expected to cost at least US$40,000.
She said the project is being financed through internal council funds as part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure.
"We are using internal funds for this important programme," she said.
Initial works have begun along Sixth Street and Robert Mugabe Way, two of the city's key thoroughfares in the CBD.
City Roads Engineer Edwin Matirongo said many of the roads in the CBD have significantly deteriorated, requiring either full reconstruction or resealing.
"Most roads require reconstruction or resealing, which needs significant funding that is currently limited," he said.
He added that resource constraints remain a major challenge in fully addressing the extent of road damage across the city.
The rehabilitation programme forms part of the city's broader infrastructure maintenance strategy, which prioritises high-traffic routes within the CBD before expanding to other affected areas.
Municipal authorities say the project is intended to improve road safety, ease traffic flow and support economic activity within the city centre.
Further updates on the progress of the rehabilitation works are expected as the programme advances toward its August completion target.
