Police have arrested a Dzivarasekwa Extension man accused of raping his neighbour's wife, assaulting her husband and setting the couple's cabin on fire in a violent incident that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
The suspect, identified as Godwilson Manake, is also facing allegations of kidnapping after the woman reportedly disappeared following the attack.
According to police investigations, Manake had allegedly been making repeated romantic advances towards his neighbour's wife, but his proposals were consistently rejected.
Authorities believe the suspect became enraged by the rejection and allegedly launched the attack at around 2am while the couple was asleep.
Police said Manake allegedly forced his way into the couple's cabin and assaulted the husband with a chain. The husband reportedly managed to escape from the room during the attack.
Investigators further allege that the suspect then overpowered the woman before sexually assaulting her.
After the alleged assault, Manake is accused of setting the cabin on fire, resulting in property damage estimated at US$500.
Police said he then allegedly took the woman from the scene and led her to a nearby bushy area.
At the time of reporting, the woman's whereabouts remained unknown, prompting ongoing police investigations and search efforts.
Confirming the incident, Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the suspect had been taken into custody.
"Police arrested a Dzivarasekwa Extension man for multiple cases that includes assault, kidnapping and malicious damage of property," said Insp Chakanza.
He added that efforts to locate the missing woman were continuing.
"The husband was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for medical attention. Total value destroyed is US$500 and nothing has been recovered," he said.
Police have not released further details as investigations continue. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in locating the missing woman to come forward and assist investigators.
If confirmed, the allegations would constitute serious criminal offences, including kidnapping, sexual assault, assault and malicious damage to property. The suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
