Suspended Zanu PF official faces hearing over snubbing

A suspended Zanu PF Central Committee member from Manicaland is set to face a disciplinary hearing over allegations that he opposed constitutional amendments extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term of office and made derogatory remarks about the Head of State.
Moses Gutu, a Central Committee member from Nyanga, was suspended following a recommendation by the Zanu PF Manicaland Provincial Executive Council (PEC), which accused him of violating Article 27 of the party's constitution.
The party also alleges that Gutu mobilised lower party structures against the constitutional amendments that seek to extend Mnangagwa's tenure.
Speaking during the Zanu PF Manicaland Provincial Coordination Committee (PCC) meeting at Mutare Polytechnic on Friday, newly appointed provincial vice-chairperson and Mutasa Central legislator Innocent Benza confirmed that disciplinary proceedings were now underway.
"There is a case we are working on concerning comrade Gutu in Nyanga district. The district submitted a report alleging that comrade Gutu denigrated our President," Benza said.
"We are going to sit down with him (Gutu) and those who brought the report, so that we have both sides of the story, and we will then deliver our ruling."
Gutu's suspension followed recommendations from the provincial leadership after allegations that he had publicly opposed the constitutional amendments and made remarks considered disrespectful towards the President.
Meanwhile, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson Tawanda Mukodza said the party had consulted its national secretary for legal affairs to ensure the disciplinary process complied with party procedures.
"We engaged the national secretary for legal affairs regarding the Moses Gutu matter, and he indicated that our report should reflect both sides of the story," Mukodza said.
The disciplinary hearing is expected to allow both Gutu and his accusers to present their accounts before the party reaches a final determination on the matter.
