Reliance on foreign aid undermines sovereignty says Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe has chided fellow African leaders for their over-reliance on foreign governments to have their budgets funded, saying it compromises self-determination and national sovereignty.

The President was addressing guests on a function to mark Zanu PF's victory in last year's harmonised elections.

Mugabe said African governments that continue to rely heavily on foreign funding are surrendering their national sovereignty as what they need always come with conditionalities that undermine their self-determination.

President Mugabe said gone is the crop of leadership like Kwame Nkrumah and Sekou Toure who stood together for the African cause and assisted one another for the African cause.

He said some African governments are receiving as high as 60 percent of their national budget funding from western governments and organisations thereby succumbing to some clandestine forms of recolonisation from the erstwhile colonisers.

"The funding of some projects by the foreign governments also brings conditionalities that deprive African countries of the full sovereignty," he said.

The event, held at State House, was attended by parliamentarians, senators, Politburo and Central Committee members.
