CHITUNGWIZA – A JILTED man who set his ex-girlfriend's house ablaze destroying property worth about $3 000 was last Friday convicted of malicious damage to property and sentenced to two years in prison.
Tapiwa Chiwara (27), who resides in Unit O, Seke, will however serve an effective one-year jail after magistrate Donald Ndirowei set aside six months of his sentence on condition he restitutes the complainant Charity Masusu (24) of $3 000 on or before November 30 this year.
The other six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, magistrate Ndirowei said: "What it now means is that the complainant is now homeless hence the need to give the accused person a deterrent sentence. He is a danger in society and therefore must be removed from society for sometime."
Chiwara was initially charged jointly with his friend Helario Makonese (37), but the latter was acquitted for lack of evidence.
