Police shot and killed a suspected armed robber on Friday after an exchange of gunfire in Chitungwiza while two more suspected criminals landed behind bars.
The three were on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) wanted list in connection with robbery cases that occurred in Harare last year.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the shootout and said Ignatius Mudzingwa had died on the spot while Kelvin Chawana and Shyleen Nyamweda were injured and taken to Chitungwiza General Hospital.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the arrest of Kelvin Chawana (24) and Shyleen Nyamweda (18) after a vehicle chase and shootout in St Mary's, Chitungwiza, on 16th January 2015," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
"Police detectives received information that the wanted armed robbers were at a certain house in Zengeza 5 and made a follow-up. One of the wanted persons, Ignatius Mudzingwa, was spotted near a parked Toyota Ipusm (registration number ACG 5242).
"On seeing police details, the accused got into the vehicle which had five occupants and sped off whilst at the same time firing shots toward the detectives.
"Police details pursued the criminals and in turn shot and deflated rear tyres of the gateaway car.
"The vehicle was found at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre after it had veered off the road and overturned.
"Ignatius Mudzingwa died on the spot whilst his accomplices were arrested and taken to Chitungwiza General Hospital.
"Police recovered firearm cartridges from the getaway vehicle. Accused persons were on the ZRP wanted list in connection with five robbery cases which occurred in Avondale, Machipisa and Southerton areas in Harare.
Chief Supt Paul Nyathi said the ZRP would ensure that the law takes its course on all criminals.
