The government is working towards implementing the e-tolling system for motorists in urban areas.
The project has already been approved by cabinet and is expected to generate money to upgrade the road network in towns and cities across the country.
The e-tolling project is being jointly handled by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, and has already received support from various transport organisations.
According to Transport Minister, Dr Obert Mpofu, the system seeks to minimise traffic congestion and inconveniences to motorists.
"Each vehicle passing through the toll gates automatically being recorded and a monthly bill will then be paid by the owner," he explained.
Urban e-tolling is expected to assist the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) in tracking down vehicles that default on licenses.
The system is also expected to ensure that vehicles with old number plates more than three years after the introduction of new ones adjust to the new system.
