FORMER legislator and cabinet minister, Fidelis Mhashu is embroiled in an adultery case.

He is accused of marrying another woman when his wife had gone to the United Kingdom.

The wife, Monica Mhashu has since made a US$10 000 adultery claim to her husband's second wife Lieta Makusha at the Chitungwiza magistrate court.

The presiding magistrate has deferred the matter to October 14.

Mhashu, who appeared as a witness of the accused, told the court that he married because his first wife was away.

"I am married under Chapter 5.11 to my first wife Monica but I had no choice other than marrying a second wife because I felt she had deserted me.

"She went to the United Kingdom with our children leaving me behind; she was not there to give me my conjugal rights so I was left with no option other than marrying another woman," he said.

Lieta had initially told the court that she got married to Mhashu unaware that he was married under chapter 5.11.

She also highlighted that she met Mhashu at a time when Monica was still in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Monica told the court that the US$10 000 was meant to compensate for emotional and psychological abuse she has been going through as a result of the separation.

She also highlighted in her papers that ever since Lieta came into the picture her husband started depriving her of conjugal rights.
