Gwanda residents have vowed to fight to the bitter end for the eventual takeover of the administration of the town's water treatment plant by council from the Zimbabwe National Authority (ZINWA), saying this will bring an end to the water woes facing the town.
Just when the Gwanda municipality and ZINWA had seemingly reached common ground on how to settle the local authority's ballooning US$10 million debt ,the parastatal has in what city fathers described as a shock move installed four prepaid bulk water meters in the town.
Gwanda residents said the installation of the prepaid water meters will create a serious water crisis in the town as ZINWA bills council US$150 000 a month against US$40 000 generated monthly by the local authority.
The residents resolved in a meeting held at Jahunda Hall this Saturday to push for council's takeover of the administration of water treatment plant in the shortest possible time.
Gwanda Mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu said the town is already faced with a water crisis with most parts of Gwanda including critical institutions such as the provincial hospital entering the second week without the precious liquid.
The Municipality of Gwanda unlike other towns, is supplied with treated instead of raw water by ZINWA, which makes the water more expensive that in other parts of the country.
