A cross-border transporter, popularly known as umalayitsha, is battling for life at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) after he was shot on both legs by police after kidnapping and unlawfully detaining a fellow transporter he suspected of having an affair with his wife.
Xolani Mathe (34) of 2516 Cowdray Park, was shot as he attempted to flee and also resisting arrest at his homestead in Insuza, Matabeleland North, on Wednesday.
He allegedly kidnapped Mr Mandisi Nyakwangwa, from the same suburb, and drove to Village 4 in Insuza where he allegedly severely assaulted him. Mathe is believed to have been in the company of three accomplices who are still at large.
It is alleged that when they arrived at his rural home, they tied Mr Nyakwangwa's legs and hands and assaulted him using a hose pipe, sticks and a pick handle.
Mathe was yesterday remanded on his hospital bed at UBH by Bulawayo magistrate Mr Takundwa Witness Mtetwa on a charge of kidnapping and unlawful detention. He was not formally charged with the offence and was remanded to 15 February.
Allegations against Mathe are that on 29 January, he and his three alleged accomplices went to Mr Nyakwangwa's house at Number 203 Cowdray Park driving a Toyota Hilux.
They allegedly forcibly opened the gate and seized Mr Nyakwangwa and shoved him into their vehicle.
The State alleged that all this happened in the eyes of Ms Jacqueline Nyakwangwa, the complainant's sister who alerted the police. Using the information, detectives tracked the vehicle to Mathe's homestead.
The detectives found the vehicle parked outside the homestead, with the complainant still tied. Mr Nyakwangwa had sustained injuries all over the body and had a wound on the palm where he had allegedly been stabbed.
The weapons used to assault him were recovered and he was referred to hospital for treatment.
It also emerged that Mathe and Mr Nyakwangwa have a long standing dispute and the former has a pending case of malicious damage to property at the Bulawayo magistrates' court after he allegedly destroyed property belonging to Mr Nyakwangwa last year.
Miss Tarisai Mutarisi represented the State.
