Illegal miner jailed 42 years for rape and robbery

BINDURA - A 24-year-old illegal miner from Gokwe, Chrispen Gundani, has been sentenced to 42 years in prison after being convicted of rape and robbery.
Regional magistrate Elisha Singano handed down the sentence, comprising 30 years for four counts of rape and 12 years for robbery.
Prosecutor Clever Nyapfani told the court that on August 22, Gundani broke into a tuckshop armed with a kitchen knife. He allegedly raped the storekeeper four times before drinking a Zambezi beer taken from the fridge. He then demanded money from the complainant but did not receive any.
Although a police report was filed at Batanai base, no immediate arrest was made. On August 30, Gundani was apprehended when police responded to public violence at Kitsiyatota mine. He was found in possession of a stolen mobile phone, and the complainant positively identified him as her attacker.
The conviction and lengthy sentence underscore the seriousness with which the courts are treating violent crimes linked to illegal mining activities.
