Esigodini man (55) sentenced for raping niece (14)

The Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court has convicted and sentenced a 55‑year‑old Esigodini man to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment for raping his 14‑year‑old niece.
The offence occurred in June 2025, when the offender hosted a party at his homestead attended by the victim and her mother. During the event, the victim’s mother placed her breastfeeding infant in the offender’s bedroom, leaving the 14‑year‑old to watch over the baby.
The offender later entered the room, found the girl seated on a chair, dragged her to the bed, undressed and raped her. He then threatened to assault her if she disclosed the matter.
The crime came to light in February 2026, when the victim’s mother noticed physical changes in her daughter. Upon questioning, the girl revealed she was pregnant and narrated the ordeal.
A police report was filed, leading to the offender’s arrest.
The NPAZ warned that perpetrators of sexual violence will be prosecuted and held accountable.
