A PLUMTREE man has appeared in court for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend at a cemetery at knifepoint last week as punishment for ending their relationship.

Kembo Ndlovu, 28, appeared before Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa facing charges of raping his former girlfriend, 24. Ndlovu told police upon his arrest that he committed the offence to punish her for breaking up with him in order to start a relationship with another man.

Prosecuting, Jane Phiri said Ndlovu went to her homestead at around 8AM on June 26 and asked to see her.  On his way back home, he convinced her to escort him.

"Ndlovu asked to have a conversation with the complainant about their just ended relationship.  As they were walking to the accused person's house they reached Mathendele Graveyard and the accused person pulled the complainant into a bush area in the cemetery and raped her once," said Phiri.

Ndlovu allegedly produced a knife and threatened to stab her if she showed any signs of resistance. During the act, Ndlovu allegedly told her that he was punishing her for cheating on him.

The prosecutor said Ndlovu also force-marched his ex-girlfriend to his house which is close to the cemetery and raped her for the second time.  He threatened to stab her if she shouted for help.  He locked her up in his house for the whole night and released her the following morning, Phiri added.

She told her uncle what had transpired and then reported the matter to the police, resulting in Ndlovu's arrest.

Magistrate Ruvetsa remanded Ndlovu in custody to July 15.
