MORE than 10 000 villagers from Umguza District are expected to register for the new Zanu-PF electronic cards, Sunday News reported.
This was revealed by Zanu-PF Umguza district co-ordinator Moses Moyo during the on-going registration process yesterday.
"So far we are very happy with the proceedings; people are coming in numbers in order to get registered for the new cards. With the way things are going, we expect to have more than 10 000 people registered by the end of the programme," said Moyo.
When a Sunday News crew visited an Arda farm, one of the registration points in Umguza District, yesterday, about 800 people had registered since Wednesday when the programme started.
"People were so many and they are still coming even today. Some were even mobilising each other to come and register for the electronic cards," Moyo said.
"People are coming out of the willingness of their hearts. Some of the people are working in Bulawayo, but they managed to take their time to come and be part of what is happening. The situation is not going to be like last time where structures were used in terms of handing the cards, but now it is fair to everyone. What matters is one's willingness and having a national identification card."
Umguza district is composed of 19 wards and the registration phase is still being done in five of these wards which are wards 2, 8, 11, 14 and 16.
However, Moyo said challenges were faced in wards 2 and 11, as some people failed to register.
"We could not manage to register everyone in these wards, hence we will have to go back to plan again and visit them soon, because we do not want to leave anyone out," he said.
Zanu-PF chairperson for Ward 8, Themba Tshuma said he was surprised by the number of people who came to register.
"I am happy because people are doing what they want and love without being pushed by anyone," Tshuma said.
The new cards include the member's photograph, designation and national identification number.
