COMMENT OVERVIEW
- The above pericope is extracted from the book of Jeremiah. During this time Israel was in exile under the hands of Babylonian leaders , perhaps Jeremiah was advising them the time frame of the punishment. Jeremiah 27 and Jeremiah 28 contain the prophecies of two well known false prophets "Hananiah and Shemaiah" who were claiming to be sent by Yahweh as they prophesied hope instead of doom .Hananiah prophesied that captivity was to take only 2 years

ANSWERS
- The context of the gobbet is Jeremiah predicting that Babylonian exile will last for seventy years . This occurred when Israel "Judah" was exiled in Babylon under the hands of Nebuchadnezzar. The form of the gobbet is an "ORACLE" ,for the message is directly coming from a prophet . The pericope is extracted from J-SOURCE ,because the name of the deity is in capitals "LORD", there are some elements of D-SOURCE "70 years of punishment" [check our article concerning the sources of gobbets ]. Jeremiah used the messenger style of speech "Thus says the Lord" ,hence, proving that he was a true prophet of Yahweh[criteria to distinguish between true and false prophets, even though some false prophets hijacked the style] It is believed that the Babylonian captivity was a way of cleaning Israel . The Lord was to fulfill his promise which he made with Israelites during the days of wandering [Deuteronomy 30:2-6]. The number 70 perhaps represents 70/71 descendants of Abraham. The periscope indicates that Jeremiah prophesied hope and doom to the Israelites [You can use this point to justify the view that Jeremiah deserve to be regarded as the prophet of doom and hope ].
N.B More points can be added .
