Africa south of Sahara is reeling under a serious semi arid and arid climate conditions . These are serious signs of desertification and that can be permanent if not abated. Hunger and droughts have been stalking this African region for a long time. Crop produce had been reduced almost to nothing leading to acute food shortages, that has impacted much on the development of the region that has been fighting a lot of challenges that include industrial economic crisis, HiV/AIDS as well as issues of xenophobia.
Countries like Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and other neighbouring economies are seriously suffering from climate change challenges most of which are food and water shortages. In most villages and schools food rationing and drought reliefs has been undertaken.
The Global Water Partnership through its regional organ, Southern Africa Water Partnership has been undertaking stringent measures in most south African countries to avert hunger and acute water shortages .
The Southern Africa Water Partnership is setting up Youth water Networks to provide smooth water governance and that will go a long way in solving the water crisis in Southern Africa. The youth water networks are a significant approach to conserve water as well as finding other methods to increase its availability. So such responsibities are well so necessary if they are undertaken by the communities themselves especially young people.
The partnership is also active in Zimbabwe through a National adaptive plan than enable low developing countries like Zimbabwe LDCS to be able to adapt to the effects and impacts of climate change, a series of training workshops have been undergoing to equip Zimbabwe with adaptative measures in these times of droughts and future climate climate challenges. The Southern Africa Water Partnership is also working with SADC and AMCOW Secretariat with the Kenyan Government and other regional economies in the implementation of Water Resources Management Plan.
It is also important to note that other arms of food governance like FAO, United Nations Food Security Commitee, SADC are complementing Southern Africa Water Partnership in the fight against water shortages and food shortages in southern Africa. It is also important that these organisations continue strengthening Africa on the side of adaptation and as well as developing innovative measures to foster food production growth and water conservation.
