Honourable ministers, we are watching!

14 May 2014 at 07:26hrs | Views

All protocol observed.

Honourable ministers, now that the dust has settled on the celebrations of the emphatic 2013 election victory, I feel it's time to put the party's manifesto into action.

It's been over nine months now since you were sworn into office and I am sure by now you have familiarized yourself with the swivel chair, desk, technical wonders and other nooks and crooks in the office.

Forgive me for being crude but now is the time to get off your behind and go on the ground and work.

Your presence in that ministry should be felt.

I applaud ZANU-PF for putting in place measures to gauge the effectiveness of its elected parliamentarians through a system that sees them reporting to the Senior Minister of State, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo.

I feel the same should be done for our honourable ministers.
The economic blueprint, Zim-Asset is clear on the need for an improved governance system.

The public administration, governance and performance management sub cluster spells out:
"In order to ensure success in the implementation of this plan, Government will be re-invented to improve general administration, governance as well as performance management….this sub-cluster also deals with ensuring that governance systems are people friendly by providing high quality services to the citizens in an efficient and effective manner…"

Accordingly, cabinet ministers should embrace this initiative and see it to fruition.

Gone are the days when ministers were appointed to just sit in office and warm the chairs.

They should take their cue from the current crop of parliamentarians who have transformed the parliament from a slumber chamber into a hotbed of constructive debate, criticism and policy formulation.

Let me hasten to point out, however, that some ministers have shown a commitment to make this current cabinet a different one and have grabbed the bull by the horns.

Noteworthy is the Ministry of Tourism and hospitality whose efforts have seen Zimbabwe being awarded the World best tourism destination and Favourite cultural destination accolades for 2014.

The ministry of Mines and Mining development has also witnessed developments worth mentioning with sanity being restored to the industry. .

There are of course other ministries where results are steadily trickling in.

Though at times some ministers may blunder in their endeavor to make their ministries work, they deserve applause for the effort they put, after all, to err is human.

They say zviri nane kurembera pane kudonha!

We await to see how other honourables will make their presence felt in the different ministries and it is my humble plea to the powers- that- be to hold them accountable.

The success of our young, yet great nation depends on everyone pulling their weight with Zim-Asset leading the way.
