Zimbabwe Cricket officials will meet in Harare on today to decide which player will captain the national side in their return to Test cricket this coming season.
The current skipper Elton Chigumbura has indicated his desire to continue in the role despite his slump in form since taking over the job more than a year ago. Brendan Taylor and Vusi Sibanda are said to be the other candidates in the running and it is expected that one captain will appointed across all three formats.
Zimbabwe are scheduled to return to Test cricket with a series against Bangladesh in early August and their preparation will include a tri-series also featuring the South African and Australian 'A' sides.
The squad of hopefuls for the tri-series is presently playing in a four-day game at the Harare Sports Club, and Zimbabwe's assistant coach Stephen Mangongo has been impressed by the competitive spirit shown by all the players on display.
"These guys have been pushing hard and the more they feel the pressure from the new players the higher they feel the need to raise their game," he said.
"Everyone knows that you have to be on top of your game to be selected.
"It's not about the names and this is the challenge that most of the players have been facing in the last six weeks.
"Each player has to prove himself," added Mangongo.
Regis Chakabva impressed in the four-day game with a hundred while Hamilton Masakadza - hoping for a recall after being left out of the Zimbabwean World Cup squad - reached three figures in a two-day last week. Mangongo has noted the performances of left-armer Brian Vitori.
"He has shown great promise and is doing quite well with the new ball," Mangongo said of the Southern Rocks' paceman.
The Zimbabwean XI will compete against South Africa and Australia 'A' in the tri-series which start on June 29th and runs until July 8.
The series will then be followed by two four-day matches against Australia A between July 15 and July 24.
