Mnangagwa dismisses social media critics

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed political discourse on social media as detached from electoral realities, telling Zanu PF's top leadership that while critics remain active online, the ruling party is focused on winning support at grassroots level.
Addressing the party's Central Committee at Zanu PF headquarters in Harare on Thursday, Mnangagwa contrasted what he described as the "wilderness of social media" with the party's mobilisation efforts in communities across the country.
"Detractors spend their time in the wilderness of social media, with its illusionary false community," Mnangagwa said.
"Zanu PF, on the other hand, is on the ground, in villages and wards, winning the hearts and minds of the people."
The President's remarks come amid growing political debate on social media platforms, where speculation, commentary and rumours about developments within the ruling party have become increasingly common.
Mnangagwa, however, said political success is determined by electoral performance rather than online discussions.
He cited Zanu PF's recent victory in the Tsholotsho by-elections, where the party retained Wards 1, 10 and 21.
"The recent by-elections held in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North Province, are a case in point," he said.
"Our Zanu PF party successfully retained all three contested wards, namely Ward 1, 10 and 21."
"Congratulations, Makorokoto, Amhlophe."
Mnangagwa attributed the victories to the party's organisational capacity and continued engagement with grassroots communities.
"This was as a result of hard work, greater organisational capacity, and a message that resonates with the grassroots," he said.
Throughout his address, the President emphasised that enduring political support is built through community mobilisation rather than social media engagement.
Despite celebrating the Tsholotsho victories, he cautioned party leaders against complacency, saying preparations must begin for upcoming electoral contests.
"Victory is a continuous responsibility," Mnangagwa said.
"We have forthcoming by-elections across the country, including in Hwange, Mazowe, Mudzi, and Mutare."
"I urge the leadership of the party to ensure that the Zanu PF machinery is always ready and well-oiled for other convincing victories."
His remarks underscore the ruling party's continued emphasis on grassroots mobilisation as it prepares for a series of by-elections scheduled in several constituencies across Zimbabwe.
