The Zimbabwe Boxing Federation open tournament will descend on Victoria Falls on 25 March 2017 as preparations for the forthcoming Zone 4 games in Angola continue to gather momentum.
The tournament, is the second one this year after another was successfully staged in Nyanyadzi, Manicaland on 25 February. As always expected, all provinces are going to take part in the boxing tournament, which will see amateur boxers from various ZBF affiliated boxing clubs scattered throughout the country battle for selection into the national team that is going to make it for Angola from 25 to 30 April.
A number of clubs have so far confirmed participation among them, Army School of Physical Training and Sports, Headquarters 2 Infantry Brigade, 3 Infantry Brigade, Mbare Boxing Club, St Mary's Boxing Club and more others drawn from all of the country's 10 provinces. The Victoria Falls tournament is being organised by the Matabeleland North Province in conjunction with the national boxing authority.
Speaking in an interview, ZBF vice president, Major Isaac Goora said preparations for the tournament were at an advanced stage with the organisers having since pushed out invitations to all provinces to come and participate.
"All is now set for the big day where spectators are going to be treated to various forms of entertainment in addition to watching top class boxing from youngsters eager to impress the coaches and make it into the Angola bound boxing national team. People in Matabeleland North are all invited to come and see some of the finest boxers the country has to offer as they battle it out in one of the country's prime resort towns," said Major Goora.
Boxing fans will not be disappointed this year as the ZBF executive council under the leadership of Jim Mpalale rolls out one the most exciting boxing calendars, which will see more other events coming up at various places during the course of the year. International boxing tournaments also make up part of the calendar.
Fresh from being recently elected president of the ZBF executive council, Mpalale called on the corporate world to come on board and sponsor the sport which has been without a partner for long. He undertook to exercise good corporate governance for the benefit of all stakeholders in the game.
"We intend to restore boxing to its former glory days through running the sport in a transparent and professional manner and I want to appeal to the corporate world to give my executive a chance to develop the sport".
