UK diaspora prepares to welcome Zimbabwe netball team

Zimbabwean diaspora organisations and companies in the UK have come together in a show of support for the Zimbabwe National Netball Team, who are set to participate in the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, and are expected to land in the UK on the 5thof July, and on the 6thJuly 2019 there will be organising a welcome ceremony at the Liverpool Marriot Hotel and various packages for the team's welfare at the global showpiece.

The welcome ceremony is being organised by the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards Foundation (ZAAF) in partnership with organisations and companies such as Diaspora Funeral Cash Plan, ZIWA, Nurseline, ExpressLink International, Indlovukazi, ZimThrive, and Chiltern Support. ZAA Foundation Chairperson Beatrice Khumalo confirmed the developments and breaking down of the tasks by the companies involved.

 "We are ready to welcome our girls and the entire delegation and are proud to announce that our sponsors are ready to give the team a fitting welcome where they will be officially welcomed by Ambassador Christian Katsande at the ceremony," she said.

"The diaspora team has set up different tasks which will see Diaspora Funeral Cash Plan welcoming the team from the airport and organising logistics to the ceremony on Saturday 6thJuly 2019.

The reception will be held at the Marriot Hotel courtesy of Nurseline and Express Link International. Zimbabwe International Women's Awards will provide the Gems with welcome packs and goody bags that will include essentials for the team and all in all we are so proud of our ladies and remain committed to celebrating notable Zimbabwean feats."

The diaspora community and businesses intervention is a shot in the arm for the Gems, as history has shown that most sport national teams from the country are usually hamstrung by funding during tournaments and for the Gems, there will be no distractions as they focus their energies on challenging for the title.

The national netball team, popularly known as the Zim Gems qualified for the World Cup Finals after an impressive campaign and will play their first match against Sri Lanka on the 12th of July 2019.

The Lloyd Makunde coached team is placed 13thin the INF world rankings, which makes them the third best-ranked team at the tourney and are in Group A with traditional powerhouses such as defending champions Australia, Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka.

Despite this being the Gems first appearance at the World Cup they can bank on the veteran talents of captain Perpetua Siyachitema, Pauline Jani and a host of emerging talents such as shooter Mercy Mukwadi among others.

The team is on a high after having started their preparation in camp in Harare for pre-tournament conditioning and team bonding and are expected to make a strong case for honours when the tournament gets underway.
