The announcement of the 2015 Zimbabwe Hip-hop award nominees last week crowned a glorious year for Bulawayo rapper Cal_Vin, who is in the running for seven awards.
The nominations, the most for any nominee at this year's ceremony, confirmed the Luveve-born and bred wordsmith's status as one of the hip hop genres most revered and fastest growing artistes. He was nominated in the Best Video, Best Album, Best Collaboration, Best Male, Best Producer, Song Of the Year and People's Choice categories.
Now in their fifth edition, the Zim Hip Hop awards, meant to recognise the country's best in the genre will be held on December 10 at the 1+1=Happy, Longchen Plaza in Harare.
The nominations represent a massive turnaround for the Zikhuphani hit-maker, who began the year without a music video to his name and not much airplay, but ended as one of the genre's most recognisable and respected names. Although he was not a recognisable figure on the local music landscape when the year began, Cal_Vin's raw talent was enough to convince Hollywood make-up artiste and Vault Cosmetics owner Jackie Mgido who offered to sponsor the artiste's first music video for Zikhuphani in February.
The song turned out to be Cal_vin's breakthrough track, as it impressed South African hip hop superstar Cassper Nyovest who heard it play during an interview he had with ZiFM. He in turn remixed it and the remix was released just before Cassper's debut visit to Bulawayo in April.
In true hip hop fashion, Cal_Vin took to Facebook to boast about his achievements, which coincided with his Babongile Sikhonjwa sponsored Limousine ride on Friday afternoon. He also celebrated his Zimbabwe Music Award (Zima) nomination in the Best Hip Hop category.
"There are people who appreciate me in my city, got a limo ride yesterday with a Skyy Vodka bottle because I got 9 nominations this year. One Zima and eight Zim Hip Hop awards.
"There're more who love me than those hating ?#ýFactsOnly," posted Cal_Vin.
