Dabengwa rules the roost

JOHANNESBURG. - MTN Zimbabwean-born president and chief executive Officer Mr Sifiso Dabengwa is the highest paid executive in South Africa's mobile cellphone sector.
This is according to a new report by Prophet Analytics, which sets Mr Dabengwa's annual salary at a whopping R22,5 million, making him one of the most influential business executives on the continent.
He serves as the company's vice-president of the South and East Africa region. He previously served as CEO of the Nigerian business, where he is now director, after a stint as MD of MTN SA.
Before joining the telecom company in 1999, Mr Dabengwa headed Eskom's distribution division, where he controlled a multibillion-rand budget in a division employing 17 000 people and generating revenues of more than R20 billion per year.
He is the former chairman of the Dawn Suite Hotel Group. He previously served on the boards of Peermont Global and Impala Platinum Holdings.
Mr Dabengwa (52) is an electrical engineer by training. He obtained his bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, and has a Wits MBA.
Behind Mr Dabengwa is Blue Label Telecom joint CEOs Mark and Brett Levy on R12 million annually.
Craig Venter of Altech earns R8 million while Business Connexion's Benjamin Mophatlane is at R7 million while Net 1 UEPS' Serge Belamant earns R6,67 million.
Other rand millionaires include Pinnacle Technology Holdings CEO Arnold Fourie with annual earnings of R5,88 million, Stefan Joselowitz of MiX Telematics on R5,79 million, Ahmed Mahomed of Datacentrix who gets R5,77 million while Mohammed Varachia of Morvest Business Group takes home R5,7 million.
Below the R5 million annual salary are Huge Group CEO James Herbst at R4,8 million, Ellies CEO Wayne Samson with R3,7 million, EOH's Asher Bohbot at R3,59 million, ConvergeNet CEO Pieter Bouwer and Sandile Swana, who jointly earn R3,4 million.
