The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has announced that national hero Ambassador Victor Matemadanda, who died on Saturday, will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Friday.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to preside over the burial ceremony.

In a statement, the ministry outlined the programme leading up to the burial, with proceedings beginning on Wednesday when Ambassador Matemadanda's body will be airlifted from Harare to Gokwe Centre in Midlands Province.

A brief ceremony is scheduled to commence at 10am, allowing members of the public and local leadership to pay their final respects to the liberation war veteran, diplomat and national leader.

"The late Ambassador Victor Matemadanda will be flown from Gokwe Centre to Village 9C, Golden Resettlement in Sanyati, Mashonaland West Province where he will lie in state at the family residence. A provincial send-off ceremony for the late national hero will be held on Thursday, 25 June 2026," the ministry said.

Following the provincial ceremony, Ambassador Matemadanda's remains will be flown back to Harare on Thursday.

Upon arrival, his body will lie in state at his residence in Mt Pleasant Heights ahead of the national burial ceremony.

Burial proceedings at the National Heroes Acre are scheduled for Friday morning.

Ambassador Matemadanda's death has been described as a significant loss for Zimbabwe, given his long service to the nation as a liberation war fighter, politician, diplomat and public servant.

Throughout his career, he played various roles in the military, political and diplomatic spheres, contributing to national development and public service.

The Government has encouraged members of the public wishing to attend the various ceremonies to follow the announced programme and pay their respects in an orderly manner.
