Harare - Zimbabwean author, Chengeto Mayowe yesterday launched the MambokadziBuilds Book Drive under her non profit, MambokadziBuilds Foundation. This milestone saw the foundation donating a total of 25 books to Bradford College in Tafara, Harare.
"The aim is to donate as much Zimbabwean literature as we can across the nation so that children can read books written by Zimbabweans. Books that they can relate to and see themselves in."- Chengeto Mayowe, Founder at MambokadziBuilds.
The foundation hopes to work with local authors in order to include a variety of books. Mayowe said the idea of the drive came when she spoke to some children who expressed the passion to read but they did not have the books to do so. A young girl named Tino was the first official recipient who led Mayowe to her school, Bradford College in Tafara. This is where the first official donation to a learning institution was made on Monday the 4th of July.
"We pride ourselves on being a nation with a high literacy rate, however if we do not play our role actively, this will change drastically. There has been a rise in suicides, drug abuse and mental health issues among the youth. Reading heals as books serve as a healthy escape or the beginning of healing for some."
MambokadziBuilds is a non profit that seeks to empower through arts, literature, crafts and cultural heritage. At the end June we launched the MambokadziBuilds book drive that's targeted at children from grade five and above. The goal is to donate Zimbabwean literature to schools across Zimbabwe as well as families that struggle. This will help teach the children from a young age about our culture and traditions.
