HARARE Central and Remand Prisons have more than their holding capacities, H-Metro has established.
More than 1 300 inmates are at Harare Remand Prison, which has a holding capacity of 900 inmates, awaiting finalisation of their cases pending before the courts.
Officer in Charge, Harare Remand Prison, Chief Superintendent Charles Nyamasoka, told H-Metro that a number of people have been neglecting their relatives, leading to overcrowding at the prison.
"All suspects can apply for bail and the increasing number of inmates at Harare Remand Prison is a clear indication that they failed to pay bail," said Chief Supt Nyamasoka.
"We are urging people to stand with their relatives in good and bad times.
"We have some white people committing crimes but their relatives quickly rescue them from being taken to remand prison by paying bail for them.
"As of today (yesterday) Harare Remand Prison has 1342 inmates awaiting their cases to be heard before the courts of law," he said.
Harare Central Prison, with a holding capacity of 1470, had 2063 inmates yesterday, according to officer-in-charge, Chief Superintendent Makawa Matipuwa.
Among the 2063 inmates, 71 were under Kentucky Prison.
The visiting Mozambique Director of National Penitentiary Services, Antonio Augusto, got time to hear from his country's nationals, who are serving sentences for various offences, and also witnessed inmates playing football at Harare Central Prison.
