A man from Chitungwiza was dragged to court after biting his younger brother's hand during a fight over US$30 that had been sent by their mother.

Obrient Chirungwa (25) bit Dylan Tembo (22) on the hand during the argument over the money, leading to his appearance before the Chitungwiza Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Alois Midzi sentenced Chirungwa to a fine of US$150 or, alternatively, three months in prison, with a further condition that he must not commit a similar offense within the next five years.

Prosecutor Munyaradzi Karimazondo told the court that on April 2 this year, the two brothers were at home when their mother sent US$30 via mobile money to Tembo, with instructions to give it to his elder brother.

Tembo gave him only US$20, sparking a dispute when Chirungwa later demanded the remaining US$10, claiming he had been short-changed.

He then called a neighbor to help mediate, but this proved futile. As soon as the neighbor turned his back and went home, Chirungwa bit Tembo on his left hand, causing injuries that required medical attention.

Medical records from the treating doctor were submitted to court as evidence.

"When we started arguing over the money, Obrient brought along a man he claimed was a police officer to mediate. But as soon as the man left, Obrient followed me and bit my left hand, injuring me," said Tembo.
