ZAPU leader Dr Dumiso Dabengwa has castigated ex-Zapu leaders still in Zanu-PF who he said are trying to win the post of Vice-President on a Zapu ticket.

Addressing journalists at Bulawayo Press Club on Thursday, Dr Dabengwa said the ex-Zapu members who include Simon Khaya Moyo, Phelekezela Mphoko, Kembo Mohadi and Ambrose Mutinhiri, should not ride on Zapu because they are no longer members of Zapu.

Said Dr Dabengwa: "The Unity Accord was meant to be a transition document. After 20 years, we cannot be talking of Zapu while in Zanu-PF. Zapu walked out of the unity accord and all those who remained are members of Zanu-PF so when they campaign for posts, should not abuse Zapu as what these aspiring to land the post of Vice-President are doing," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Dabengwa has denied talks that his party has formed a grand coalition with MDC Renewal Team and the Professor Welshman Ncube led MDC.

Dr Dabengwa told journalists at the Bulawayo Press Club on Thursday that reports by MDC Renewal Team that they teamed up with his party to form a grand coalition to challenge Zanu-PF were maliciously and false.

"There have been Press reports that an agreement will be signed by the two formations this month end. Zapu is not part of those merger talks between Ncube and Biti. While we wish them well in that endeavour, we are not part of their coalition. I want to categorically state that the Press reports linking Zapu to the signing of any agreement on November 30 are ill- informed and false," he said.

Dr Dabengwa seems to be contradicting his deputy, Emilia Mukaratirwa, who in August this year said Zapu was keen to forming an alliance with the two MDCs.

Asked why he was not joining the grand coalition considering that his party performed dismally in the 2013 harmonised elections, Dr Dabengwa said: "Don't rush us into a coalition. We don't forget the experiences we went through. It is better to take long rather than to speed up and pull out in a few months. Our idea is not to just remove the Zanu-PF government but it goes beyond that.""
