Mthwakazi Republic Party officials and their leader Mqondisi Moyo's court case has been set for Wednesday afrter the officials were last week fined $30 for defaulting to appear in court.
MRP spokesperson Mbonisi Gumbo wrote: "MRP Leaders Court Trial Tomorrow Following the arrest of Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) president Mqondisi Moyo and ten other leaders on December 2017, and the subsequent charge of him and the SG Hloniphani Ncube, their court trial is expected to start tomorrow 17 May 2017. The Lupane police arrested the 11 cadres on 14 December 2016 at a celebration party organised by villagers, meant to show their support and appreciation for the four villagers some of whom were school development committee SDC members, who were found not guilty by the Lupane courts."
He said following their arrest in June last year when they were delivering a message to Mlamuli Secondary School Head mistress Ms Bonyongwe to leave the school since she was not welcomed to the school by both students and their parents.
"he police arrested only the MRP leaders despite the fact that they were invited at the function by villagers and the organizers had written a letter to the local Chief, Chief Mabhikwa informing him about the said function. The Zimbabwean Constitution says, before you conduct any public gathering you have to notify the regulating authority, the chief is also a regulating authority in as far as we are concerned. The trial is set for 17 and 18 of May," he said.
"The Lawyer is likely to ask the Lupane Magistrate court to cancel the case before trial or to refer the matter to the Constitutional court. MRP is worried by the interference of ZANU PF politicians in the Judicial system. We are fully convinced that the case is politically motivated to slow down MRP's campaign. We are equal to the task and we are ready as a party to defend our Mthwakazi by any means possible. We are fully convinced that our leaders have no case to answer. And the State have poorly handled this case. MRP FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE IN OUR LIFE TIME MRP Information Department."
