Illegal miner dies in a disused shaft mine in Khumalo suburb

An illegal miner died in a shaft in the splashy suburb of Khumalo in Bulawayo after he was trapped when it collapsed.
Two of his colleagues survived the incident.
The deceased miner Edmore Malaba aged 40 from Shurugwi died at a disused mine at the intersection of Coghlan and Cecil Avenue in Khumalo adjacent to the National University of Science and Technology on Tuesday.
In a statement, Bulawayo Province police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Garikayi Chipfunde said they are investigating the matter where Malaba is reported to have been trapped with two other illegal miners only making it alive after they were saved by other amakorokozas who were working on a nearby shaft.
When the ZBC News crew visited the illegal mining shaft, police details were rounding up the illegal miners operating in the area.
This news crew is reliably informed that the case came to light after some illegal miners clandestinely took the deceased's body to Shurugwi mortuary hospital despite the fact that Malaba died in Bulawayo.
Information at hand indicates that the illegal mining area which lies within the old Nick Mine area is rich with gold deposits and is now being used for the extraction of quarry which made it easy for the amakorokoza to do their illicit activities without detection from the law enforcement agents.
Bulawayo Province Environmental Management Agency provincial manager Mr Decent Ndlovu urged miners to practice proper mining methods within the dictates of the law to preserve lives.
Bulawayo has become Zimbabwe's new Eldorado with over 150 illegal miners having besieged the Matsheumhlope suburb for a gold rush in recent weeks.
