A 43-YEAR-OLD woman from Shangani was killed in Gweru recently after a motorist, who was on a long and winding fuel queue early in the morning, lost control of his vehicle and hit her while she was seated on the pavement after failing to get transport home the previous day.
Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident.
She said the deceased, Vongai Mapako, had slept on the pavement after failing to get transport to her rural home in Shangani the previous day.
"Police in Gweru are investigating a case of fatal road traffic accident which happened at Jarani wholesale, where a 43-year-old woman was run over by a vehicle which was in a fuel queue," she said.
Mukwende said Mapako, of Tirimuhondo village under Chief Mapanzure in Shangani, was sitting outside Jarani wholesale with another stranded passenger identified as Tavawana Chinyoka.
"George Mbanje was in a fuel queue heading to Sakunda Garage, which had extended to RG Mugabe way in 3rd Street. George Mbanje drove off and lost control of the vehicle. He hit Mapako who died on the spot, while Chinyoka sustained injuries. Mapako was taken to Gweru Hospital mortuary, while Chinyoka was taken there also for medication," she said.
Mbanje was taken into police custody and will appear in court soon on culpable homicide charges.
