Cattle buyers reap off farmers

The Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) has warned the public against "unscrupulous" cattle buyers who will take advantage of the drought to rip-off farmers.
With drought threatening most livestock around the cattle ranching areas of the Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland North and South, ZCFU President Donald Khumalo has urged cattle farmers to watch out for corrupt buyers who are reported to be already offering very low prices per beast.
"We have reports that these unscrupulous buyers are offering prices as low as $200 per beast and might rip-off the desperate farmers in the process," said Khumalo.
The ZCFU also urged farmers to come up with other combative measures such as creating fodder banks and moving their livestock to other areas which have pastures and water.
Experts have said the droughts experienced over the years are heavily impacting on the national herd rehabilitation and there is need for the country to introduce long-term measures.
