A Kambuzuma businessman last Friday admitted to possessing a snake to a Johane Masowe WeChishanu prophet when he visited the shrine for prayers. The snake was killed at the place of worship (paMasowe).
A puff adder was hidden in a bag by the businessman identified as Bernard Muza. Madzibaba Tsungai Makumbe claimed that the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that there was a live snake in the bag. The incident happened along High Glen Road near Western Triangle Bus terminus where the apostolic sect was on their weekly Friday prayers.
Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector James Sabau confirmed receiving the report saying: "We received a report of the disturbances at the place where people were attending a prayer before a snake was discovered."
Scores of people thronged the shrine to catch a glimpse of the huge snake and its owner who was later covered with a white cloth and hidden in a nearby car. The snake was also later covered with a white cloth. There was chaos as motorists parked their cars, blocking all the traffic, as they rushed too see the snake. Police swiftly intervened before leading Madzibaba Makumbe and Bernard to Glen Norah Police Station.
Madzibaba Tsungai claimed that it was revealed to him that the snake was left in the hands of Bernard after the death of his father who happened to own the snake for ritual purposes.
"This man came all the way from Kambuzuma for his business prayers before the Holy Spirit revealed to me that he had a snake in his bag. It is his first time to visit here and is not a member of our church and he just left his bag where all men leave their shoes and bags. I asked him to open his bag and the puff adder snake came out and we killed it before he admitted that it was left in his possession by his late father for ritual purposes. We are very alert. There are people who visit here to tempt our prophecies and such evil acts are revealed to us. We are going to take this to police as you can see people are baying for his blood and it will defile our place of worship here," said Madzibaba Tsungai.
Bernard admitted that the snake was in his bag but had little room to explain as the swelling crowd bayed for his blood. He said: "Yes it was in my bag....." and Bernard was whisked into Madzibaba Tsungai's Mercedes Benz parked near the shrine.
However, opinion was divided as some believed the prophets were suspicious.
"Last time pakaonekwa mupurwa However, the majority in the crowd believed the theory that businessmen of today have resorted to the use of juju to make money. Earlier, church members were kept busy as they tried to control the swelling crowd. They demanded that people respect the shrine by removing shoes as the crowd jostled to catch a glimpse of the snake.
"Shoes and cameras are not allowed at the shrine or else the angel that lead us here WILL MAKE YOU FALL and pictures will MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEAR from your camera," shouted one of the followers to the photo-journalist.
