The United States of America Embassy in Harare has come under fire for posting a status on Twitter saying America stands with Zimbabwe as the country celebrate its 39th Independence.
"We congratulate Zimbabwe on 39 years of independence today." The Embassy said. "The United States remains a committed partner to the people of Zimbabwe and shares your hopes for growth, prosperity and a brighter future. #WeStandWithZim."
In response one PT Chimusoro said, "You don't stand with Zimbabwe. You stand against Zimbabwe. If you stand with Zimbabwe, why put it under cruel sanctions? We are not as dumb as you think we are that you come and lie straight in our faces."
Journalist Brighton Musonza blasted the Embassy saying Zimbabwe does not have worse issues than other countries.
"We don't need this absolute nonsense Ambassador. Just remove sanctions on Zimbabwe. Two decades of economic sanctions like as if we have invaded New York. There are countries that have done far worse things than us. This from an opposition supporter here; a founding member of MDC."
Exiled businessman Mutumwa Mawere said, "The journey of independence has taken 39 years. When one pauses to reflect on its true experiences, some would conclude that the US govt is culpable for diverting the narrative through the imposition of sanctions. However, the reality remains what it is and will remain so."
