The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted additional rainfall across Zimbabwe's southern region over the next two days, with the downpours expected to shift towards the eastern parts of the country by Wednesday. The rains are set to bring much-needed relief for farmers who have already begun land preparations for the planting season, as well as for livestock, with dams and rivers likely to see replenishment following severe drought conditions caused by El NiƱo.
According to an MSD statement, a cloud band entered Zimbabwe from the west on Sunday, November 10, bringing moisture to Matabeleland and the Bulawayo Metropolitan areas. On Monday evening, more moisture is anticipated to enter from the southeast coast of southern Africa, resulting in increased rainfall in Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and Manicaland provinces on Tuesday, November 12. Heavier rains are then expected in southern parts of Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, and Harare Metropolitan provinces on Wednesday, November 13.
The MSD also warned against attempting to cross flooded rivers, emphasizing the risks posed by heavy rainfall upstream that could cause unexpected flooding downstream.
"Lightning, hailstorms, wind gusts, and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the country. The public is urged to seek shelter in buildings with conductors to protect against lightning," the agency stated.
This forecast signals hope for agricultural activity in the country, with water levels in many open sources anticipated to rise, supporting farming and livestock needs after the prolonged dry spell. The MSD advises continued caution, particularly around rivers and waterways, as intense rains may create sudden flooding even in areas that may not have experienced heavy local rainfall.
