A 40-year-old man from Gweru has been sentenced to four months in prison after threatening his brother with a knife and physically assaulting him in an altercation at their parents' home.

The incident occurred on the morning of 20 October 2024, around 2 am, when Absalom Siyabonga woke his 38-year-old brother, who was asleep at the time. Siyabonga, brandishing a knife, allegedly ordered his brother to leave the family home immediately, leading to a heated misunderstanding between the two.

During the confrontation, Siyabonga slapped his brother several times on the right hand and kicked him in the stomach, escalating the situation further. The assault resulted in the brother sustaining minor injuries.

Siyabonga was charged with threatening and physically assaulting his sibling, and the case was brought before the courts. According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the accused was sentenced to four months imprisonment, which has been wholly suspended for five years. This means that Siyabonga will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offence within the next five years.

The court's decision highlights the growing concern over family violence and the need for responsible conflict resolution in domestic settings. The case has drawn attention to the importance of addressing domestic disputes in a peaceful manner to avoid further harm.
