A 63-year-old woman from Nkayi is fighting for her life after being attacked with an axe by her 29-year-old son, Shackman Dube, who is suspected to be mentally ill. The incident occurred on November 4 in Majoyi area, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the incident and revealed that the suspect has been arrested on charges of attempted murder.
Argument Turns Violent

The altercation reportedly began when Christine Dube reprimanded her son for burning his clothes. This angered Shackman, who insulted his mother before escalating the situation by grabbing an axe and striking her on the head.

"The victim sustained a deep cut to the head and was rushed to Nkayi District Hospital, where she is currently admitted," said Insp Banda.

Police Investigations Ongoing
Authorities are investigating the case, with preliminary findings suggesting that the suspect's actions may have been influenced by mental health issues.

Inspector Banda urged families dealing with mentally ill relatives to seek professional help to prevent such tragic incidents.

"Our communities must prioritize seeking medical and psychological intervention for family members showing signs of mental illness to avoid such unfortunate situations," said Insp Banda.

The incident has left the Majoyi community in shock as they rally to support the victim and her family during this difficult time.
