Former Highlanders players gathered at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo on Saturday to honor their departed teammates in a solemn yet celebratory commemoration. The gathering, which has become an annual tradition, involved cleaning the graves, offering prayers, and reflecting on the legacies of those who made significant contributions to Highlanders Football Club.
This year's event was marked by a generous gesture from Straight Suppliers and Distributors, who donated two tombstones to commemorate the lives of the late Majuta Mpofu and Dumisani Ngulube. Temba Sibanda, whose company specializes in granite products, pledged to donate two tombstones annually to support the Former Highlanders Players Association in their efforts to ensure a dignified resting place for their late colleagues.
"It is a touching exercise by Highlanders legends for their former teammates and families. What we want is a decent resting place for our departed," said Sibanda.
The partnership not only honors the late players but also aligns with the company's corporate social responsibility, with Sibanda expressing hope that other organizations will follow suit.
Douglas Mloyi, chairperson of the Former Highlanders Players Association, and his deputy Netsai Moyo have been instrumental in organizing the annual event. Speaking at the Highlanders Clubhouse, Moyo highlighted the importance of the tradition.
"Every year, we get together and celebrate our former teammates. We visit their graves to pay our respects, clean up the areas, and then gather for a fun day at the clubhouse," said Moyo.
The association, supported by donations, aims to ensure the graves of fallen players are well-maintained and their memories preserved.
The commemoration brought together numerous former Highlanders players, including legends such as Madinda Ndlovu, Peter Nkomo, Smart Moyo, Gift Lunga (Senior), and many others.
The event serves not only as a tribute but also as a reminder of the rich history and camaraderie that Highlanders Football Club represents.
The contributions of departed players like Majuta Mpofu, Willard Khumalo, and Mercedes Sibanda remain etched in the hearts of the Highlanders community. With ongoing support from sponsors and the tireless efforts of the association, the legacy of these football heroes will continue to be celebrated for generations.
"It is our way of keeping their spirits alive and ensuring they are never forgotten," said Moyo.
As the Former Highlanders Players Association strengthens its initiatives, the call for broader community and corporate support echoes, ensuring that the memories of Bosso's legends are honored in perpetuity.
